THOM DAVID UTECHT, BSI, ASH
Remembering Montague Street
by Peter Crupe
Thom Utecht passed away on November 9, 2018, after a long battle with MS and a lengthy hospital stay.
I first met Thom at a John Bennett Shaw workshop held at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken NJ. Subsequently in the fall of 1985, along with Larry Feldman and Evelyn Herzog, we founded The Montague Street Lodgers of Brooklyn. In 1994, Thom received the BSI investiture of Arthur Charpentier. And most appropriately, his ASH investiture was Montague Street.
Thom received his BA in Communications from Queens College NY. He then pursued a career in retail communications with Macy’s and subsequently with the Navy as a civilian. While he was with the Navy, Tom earned an MBA from Long Island University.
Sherlock Holmes was only one of Thom’s many interests. He loved the opera and champagne. He was an amateur hockey referee and a volunteer at the Museum of Natural History. He was certified in First Aid and CPR and had a fondness for turtles.
At Queens College, Thom met his wonderful wife of 46 years, Maryellen. Maryellen’s ASH investiture is The Countess of Morcar.
Thom was a good friend and companion, as well as an outstanding Sherlockian. All of us who knew him will miss Thom’s wicked sense of humor and gentle personality.
God bless you, Thom, and rest in peace.
