NANCY DEAN, ASH
Remembering A Disreputable Statuette
by Frank Ferry and Evelyn Herzog
Nancy Minogue Dean – to give her the full name she enjoyed bearing – passed away on May 12th at the age of 84 in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Nancy was a passionate and loyal Sherlockian, a charter member of Mycroft’s League in Philadelphia, and a member of ASH, invested in 2008 as “A Disreputable Statuette”. She is survived by three sons, a daughter, and six grandchildren. A lifelong Pennsylvanian, she was also loyal to her various communities in and around Philadelphia, Mechanicsburg, and Pittsburgh, and to her Church. Rarely missing a League or ASH event during her most active years, Nancy traveled long distances by bus or train to attend. She was passionately loyal to friends and loved ones both in and outside of the Sherlock Holmes community. Energetically inquiring and probing, she cared deeply for the rest of us and for what we did. Slight of build, Nancy was our whirlwind – vibrant with energy, curiosity, and an endless supply of anecdotes, all of which ended in laughter. She clearly was most inspiring as a teacher and a force to be reckoned with in dealing with bureaucracies. Nancy gave us some toasts and some talks, but mostly she gave us her entertaining company. Her son Tim wrote to let us know of her loss and confided, “She truly treasured your group.” In recent years, age and her move to the Pittsburgh area kept her away from Sherlockian events, but Nancy is loved and missed and will always be an Adventuress.
